With the threat to public health at an all-time high, should churches close their doors or remain open in defiance of government orders. Let’s examine God’s view on this issue.
Today, every state in the US is under some degree of quarantine or “COVID-19” observation. We have been told to stay at home, close non-essential businesses and even our churches.
Anyone who knows history will tell you our country was founded on the purpose of freedom of religion and hold the separation between church and state seriously. Especially, when the state encroaches on the rights of Christian (and other mainstream religious organizations) churches to close under an order from the state.
For Christians to properly address the stay at home mandate from the state, we should first consult the Bible for answers to our modern problems. When we discuss the issues between church and state in God’s will for our lives, we need to read and examine Romans 13:1-5 that says, “Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. 2 Consequently, whoever rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves.3 For rulers hold no terror for those who do right, but for those who do wrong. Do you want to be free from fear of the one in authority? Then do what is right and you will be commended. 4 For the one in authority is God’s servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for rulers do not bear the sword for no reason. They are God’s servants, agents of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer. 5Therefore, it is necessary to submit to the authorities, not only because of possible punishment but also as a matter of conscience.”
From this passage of Romans, we are clearly ordered to obey the government and follow each state’s “stay at home order”.
However, this does not mean we cannot have church services during this time. Our government has not forbid holding services online. No state has yet banned the practice of holding small home-church services. Thankfully, there are no states threatening to do so.
I firmly believe, from a Biblical perspective, we should obey the stay at home order to protect the health and safety of all persons including our families. We have an obligation to protect our loved ones, our fellow Christian and our neighbors.
This virus is evil and attacks the weak, elderly and the young. The Devil’s hand is at work here and we cannot and will not let him win. God will protect us in this time as we keep the faith. The Bible tells us in 2 Thessalonians 3:3, that in time of trouble, “… the Lord is faithful, and he will strengthen you and protect you from the evil one.”
The Devil destroys, his ways lead to destruction, death and sorrow. He hopes to lure people away from following God’s will and in the process kill, harm and hurt the faithful. Therefore, stay at home, wash your hands and follow state stay-at-home orders.
As we place our faith in God, we must have faith in who he choose to be in leadership positions. For God is in control of those in power and let our faith show in our following social guidelines.
Stay connected to your church, read the Bible, have family bible studies and keep your heart and mind on the Lord. By doing so, we will all get through this difficult time together and with a closer relationship with God. Amen
